Washington University ProSPER (Promoting Science Policy, Education, and Research) is a graduate student organization dedicated to promoting science policy, education, and research. Our mission is to help graduate students explore issues in science policy, advocacy, communication, and outreach. Our vision is for graduate students to develop the skills to advocate for evidence-based policies and communicate science to broad audiences.
ProSPER provides opportunities for students to discuss science and evidence-based policy with peers and legislators. We hold policy forums and partner with the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement to organize voter engagement opportunities. ProSPER supports an annual trip to the Missouri capitol, Jefferson City. This event enables students to meet with their legislators to learn about the development and implementation of policies related to science education and research.
ProSPER provides resources for students to develop their science communication skills. On our blog, members write about science, research, and policy. The blog is an opportunity for members to practice discussing science with the public. ProSPER also hosts workshops that cover topics including science writing, social media, and podcasting. We provide opportunities for students to practice their science communication skills at monthly meetings and science communication events.
ProSPER has hosted panels, forums, and roundtables to engage with the public. As a multidisciplinary group, ProSPER fosters diverse perspectives on a range of science policy, communication, and education topics. Previous topics include vaccines, climate change, and radioactive waste management.
ProSPER also organizes professional development opportunities for students interested in non-academic careers, including science writing, advocacy, and industry. We sponsor on-site visits to occupational settings outside of academia. Previous visits have included the St. Louis Science Center and the Cortex Innovation Community. Through partnerships with local organizations like the MOST Policy Initiative Inc. and national organizations like the National Science Policy Network, ProSPER connects students to professionals working in science policy, education, and research.
